Why families choose our family-friendly Japanese restaurant in Angel.

Sanjugo Angel is a small, welcoming Japanese restaurant just off Upper Street in Islington. Families visit us for everything from a quick weekday lunch to an early dinner before heading home.

For younger diners, there are plenty of approachable dishes that don’t require children to already be sushi fans. Chicken katsu curry, soft bao buns, edamame, rice and Japanese fried chicken are all easy places to start.

For parents, the atmosphere is relaxed and our team is happy to help families get settled.

Because the restaurant is intimate rather than large, weekday lunches tend to be the most comfortable option if you’re visiting with a buggy or very young children.

What can children eat at Sanjugo?

You don’t have to start with raw fish to introduce children to Japanese food.

Many Japanese dishes use familiar ingredients such as chicken, rice and vegetables, making it easy to find something approachable for younger or more cautious eaters.

Some of the most popular family-friendly choices at Sanjugo Angel include:

Chicken Katsu Curry Don — £12

Crispy breaded chicken served with rice and a mild Japanese curry sauce. It’s comforting, filling and one of the easiest introductions to Japanese food for children.

Teriyaki Chicken Bao — from £5

A soft, fluffy bao bun with a gently sweet teriyaki flavour. Easy to hold and particularly good for children who prefer familiar flavours.

Vegetable Bao — from £5

A meat-free alternative with the same soft bao bun, making it a useful option for vegetarian families.

Edamame — £4.80

Warm soybeans served in their pods. Simple, lightly salted and fun for older children to eat.

Chicken Karaage — £9

Japanese-style fried chicken with a crisp outside and tender centre — a familiar choice for children who aren’t ready to experiment too far.

Homemade Chicken Tenders — £9

Another straightforward option for cautious or younger eaters.

Plain Rice — £3

A useful side for younger children or anyone who prefers something simple.

Miso Soup — £3

A warm, light Japanese soup that works well alongside rice or another small dish.

Had a great experience at this Japanese restaurant! The salmon and tuna were incredibly fresh, and the unagi don was rich and flavorful. The seaweed salad was light and refreshing. On top of that, the service was warm and attentive—made the whole meal even more enjoyable. Highly recommended!

Reading the reviews of this place we were expecting a really good food and service. However we were disappointed. Food was OK (nothing extraordinary but not bad). Service was not attentive and the restaurant’s atmosphere was a bit on the lower side. We did not get a 4.8 star experience (which is the average of the reviews)

Guests regularly praise how careful our team is with dietary needs and allergies — something families with fussy or allergic eaters tell us they appreciate.

Can children try sushi at Sanjugo?

Absolutely.

For children who are curious about sushi, you can start with simpler rolls rather than jumping straight into sashimi.

The California Roll (£11.50) and Salmon & Avocado Roll (£10) are approachable choices for young diners who want to explore sushi.

Our team can also help you choose dishes based on what your child already enjoys.

There’s no pressure to turn dinner into a food challenge. A plate of katsu and rice is just as welcome as a first taste of sushi.

Is Sanjugo Angel suitable for babies and toddlers?

Yes. High chairs are available for younger guests, and families with babies and toddlers are welcome.

Sanjugo Angel is a cosy restaurant, however, so space for larger pushchairs can be more limited when we’re busy.

If you’re bringing a buggy, weekday lunchtime is generally the easiest time to visit, when the restaurant tends to be calmer and there’s more room to get settled.

If you’re booking ahead, mentioning that you’re bringing a baby, high chair or pushchair can also help our team prepare for your arrival.

What is the best time to visit Sanjugo Angel with children?

For families with younger children, we recommend weekday lunch, particularly between 12:00pm and 2:00pm.

The restaurant is generally calmer than during the evening rush, making it easier if you’re bringing a pushchair, need a high chair or simply want a more relaxed meal with little ones.

An early dinner can also work well for families who prefer to eat before the busiest part of the evening.

Can Sanjugo Angel cater for allergies and dietary requirements?

If you or your child has a food allergy or dietary requirement, please tell our team before ordering.

We can explain ingredients, suggest suitable dishes and discuss possible adjustments where appropriate. Vegan and vegetarian choices are also available across the menu.

Options include dishes such as vegetable bao and vegetable sushi rolls, alongside other plant-based choices.

For serious allergies, please speak directly with the restaurant team about your requirements so we can give you the most appropriate information before you order.

A word from our chef

“Cooking for children is something I really enjoy. A child trying katsu curry or a bao bun for the first time — that’s how a love of Japanese food can begin.

We want younger guests to feel just as welcome at the table as their parents, and we’re always happy to help families find dishes they’ll enjoy.”---— jimmy, Head Chef, Sanjugo Angel

A Japanese meal the whole family can share

One of the nicest things about Japanese dining is that everyone at the table doesn’t have to order the same kind of food.

One child can have chicken katsu and rice. Another can try their first sushi roll. Parents can order sashimi, sushi and small plates to share.

That makes Sanjugo a good option for families where everyone has slightly different tastes.

Our name reflects that same sense of happiness around the table. Sanjugo means “thirty-five” in Japanese — san (3), ju (10) and go (5). The digits add up to eight, a number associated with good fortune in several Asian cultures.

For us, though, the idea is simple: good Japanese food should bring people together.

Whether it’s your child’s first bao bun or your family’s hundredth sushi dinner, we want Sanjugo Angel to feel like somewhere everyone can enjoy eating.
