WHAT DOES 'SANJUGO' STAND FOR?

Introduction

What's in a name? In Japanese culture — everything.

When we opened our doors in 2016, we didn't choose the name Sanjugo by chance. We chose it because it tells a story — one rooted in mathematics, Japanese tradition, and a quiet belief that good fortune belongs on every table.

If you've ever wondered what Sanjugo means, you're not alone.

Sanjugo (三十五) translates to "thirty-five" in Japanese. But behind the number lies something far more meaningful. In Japanese culture, numbers carry symbolism — and the number five, when combined with three, connects to balance, harmony, and ultimately, to eight — a number widely associated with prosperity and good fortune.

Across our three London locations — Victoria, Shoreditch, and Angel — this idea shapes everything we do. From the food we serve to the atmosphere we create, Sanjugo is more than a name; it's a philosophy.

In this post, we'll explore the meaning behind Sanjugo, why certain numbers matter in Japanese culture, and what you can expect when you dine with us.

THE HIDDEN MATHS OF SANJUGO - A NAME THAT ADDS UP

In Japanese, san (三) means three, and go (五) means five. The middle character, ju (十), usually means ten. But at Sanjugo, we like to see it a little differently.

Ju 十

Go 伍

In Japan, the number eight — 八 (hachi) — is widely associated with good fortune. Its shape widens towards the base, symbolising growth, prosperity, and a future that opens outward rather than closes in. It's a number often chosen with intention — appearing in names, addresses, and moments that are meant to carry luck.

That idea sits quietly at the heart of Sanjugo.

Our name isn't meant to be a puzzle to solve, but an invitation — to look a little closer, to appreciate the details, and to experience something crafted with intention. When we brought Sanjugo to London, we wanted more than just an authentic Japanese restaurant. We wanted to create a space where care, balance, and quiet precision shape every part of the experience.

That same philosophy runs through our menu. From the precision of our sashimi to the thoughtful pairing of sake, every element is considered. Nothing is accidental — and everything is designed to bring a sense of balance, harmony, and, perhaps, a little good fortune to your table.

Three London Locations, One Izakaya Soul

A Japanese izakaya is many things: a place to eat, to drink, and to unwind. Often described as a "place to stay and drink," it's built around a slower rhythm — one where conversation flows easily and time isn't rushed. That spirit is exactly what we set out to bring to London with Sanjugo.

In Victoria, we welcome city workers, theatre-goers, and travellers moving through one of London's busiest junctions. It's a space where a solo diner at the counter feels just as at home as a group marking a special occasion — the pace adjusts to you.

In Shoreditch, the atmosphere shifts. Creative energy fills the room, carried alongside the sounds and aromas of the kitchen. It's a natural home for an izakaya experience — where sharing plates, good sake, and unhurried conversation come together effortlessly.

And then there's Angel, tucked into the characterful streets of Islington. Here, familiarity is built over time. Guests return not just because it's nearby, but because they know what to expect: consistency, warmth, and a sense of being genuinely looked after.

Across all three locations, one thing remains constant. A commitment to quality — from carefully sourced fish for our sushi and sashimi, to a sake selection chosen to complement each dish, to a kitchen that takes quiet pride in every plate.

Sanjugo is, at its heart, a Japanese izakaya in London that doesn't compromise — on flavour, on atmosphere, or on the experience we create for every guest.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU VISIT SANJUGO

First-time visitors often ask what sets Sanjugo apart from other Japanese restaurants in London. The answer begins well before the first dish arrives.

It starts with how we source our ingredients. Fish and produce are selected for quality first — never cost. Our sake list is curated with the same care as a wine programme, and our team is always ready to guide you, whether you're discovering sake for the first time or already know what you like.

To make the most of your visit, here are a few things worth knowing:

Our menu changes with the seasons. What you love in spring may give way to something new in autumn. Ask your server what's just arrived.

★ Sake pairings can transform your meal. If you're unsure where to begin, ask for a recommendation — it's one of our favourite conversations to have.

Izakaya dining is meant for sharing. Order a little more than you think you need, take your time, and let the evening unfold naturally.

Reservations are recommended. Weekends fill up quickly across all three locations, particularly in Shoreditch and Angel.

If you're not sure where to start, our sashimi is always a strong first choice — clean, precise, and a true expression of ingredient quality. From there, explore the menu, follow the guidance of our team, and let the experience build at its own pace.
